I Have Crowns, Bridges, or Veneers — Can I Still Get Invisalign?

If your teeth are not well-aligned, you might be ready to visit your dentist to talk about Invisalign. Indeed, straightening your smile can make a world of difference in your oral health, your appearance, and your confidence! But what if you had some dental work done in the past, such as crowns, bridges, or veneers? Will they affect your candidacy for Invisalign? This blog post explains what you should know.

Crowns

Crowns are custom-made restorations that fit over your natural teeth to enhance their strength and visual appeal. Invisalign aligners can often be tailored to fit comfortably over teeth with crowns, protecting them while still allowing tooth movements.

In fact, choosing Invisalign over traditional braces offers a notable benefit if you have crowns. Braces brackets sometimes fail to adhere securely to crowned teeth, creating additional challenges during treatment. Invisalign aligners do not rely on brackets, so your crowns can remain undisturbed throughout the process.

Bridges

Bridges replace missing teeth, and they do so by connecting two remaining natural teeth. Therefore, they do not move as freely as individual teeth during orthodontic treatment. In fact, Invisalign may not be able to shift them at all. The good news is that, in many cases, an orthodontic treatment plan can be designed that moves the teeth around the bridge, leading to improved overall dental alignment.

Veneers

Veneers are delicate, custom-crafted shells that get attached to the front side of your teeth to improve their appearance. If you have veneers, your dentist will have to review their placement and durability before moving forward with Invisalign. The aligners apply gentle pressure and typically do not harm veneers, but their presence may still require special precautions.

If you have not yet gotten veneers, it is recommended that you wait until after Invisalign treatment to move forward with them.

Consult Your Invisalign Provider

Dental prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges, and veneers, are very common. Dentists have lots of experience in working with Invisalign patients who have them! Therefore, past dental work should not hold you back from attending a consultation. Hopefully, you will soon be on your way to straighter teeth and greater confidence.
