Can I Drink Coffee after a Tooth Extraction?

After getting a tooth removed, there is a brief recovery period wherein you will have to change some of your daily habits. For example, you should be sure to get plenty of rest and eat soft foods. But you might wonder about your morning cup of Joe. In fact, you may be eager to ask, “Can I drink coffee after a tooth extraction?” Read on below to learn the answer.

How Will Hot Coffee Affect Your Extraction Site?

Unfortunately, hot coffee will be temporarily off-limits following your extraction. There are a couple of reasons for this:

  • The hot temperature could irritate your nerve endings and other sensitive tissues. This can cause significant discomfort and worsen swelling at the extraction site.
  • Hot coffee increases the risk of dry socket. Dry socket is a condition that occurs when the blood clot at an extraction site fails to form or gets prematurely dislodged. It can be quite painful and significantly slow down your recovery.

When Can You Resume Hot Coffee Consumption?

Dentists have varying recommendations on how soon you can resume consumption of hot coffee (and other hot beverages) following an extraction. To play it safe, it would be wise to wait at least five days.

When you resume drinking coffee, take it easy. Have just a small cup and see how it makes you feel. If you do not notice any irritation or other adverse symptoms, you can continue increasing your intake until you are back into your normal routine.

What About Cold Coffee?

The biggest problem with consuming coffee after an extraction stems from its temperature. Hot liquids are not recommended.  But what about iced coffee and cold brew? The cool temperature may be soothing in your mouth. However, it would still be wise to wait a day or two before consuming any.

The caffeine in the coffee enlarges blood vessels and increases blood pressure, both of which might increase bleeding after your procedure. Plus, because you may not be eating much within the first 24 – 48 hours after your appointment, the acid in the coffee might irritate your stomach.

Coffee is a delightful beverage, and under normal circumstances, there is nothing wrong with drinking it in moderation. However, you will have to adjust your java habits following your tooth extraction.
