Do Tooth Extractions Cure Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, starts out as a mild infection of the gum tissue. As it advances, however, it can cause significant damage. If you have this condition, it is vital that you seek treatment in a timely manner. Your dentist might urge you to undergo tooth extractions as part of your journey toward a healthier mouth.

But do tooth extractions actually cure gum disease, or is there another reason why they are often included in a periodontal treatment plan? Continue reading this blog post to find out.

Do Tooth Extractions Make Gum Disease Go Away?

Gum disease attacks the tissue around the teeth; it does not affect the teeth themselves. Therefore, you cannot expect tooth extractions to directly fight gum disease.

To stop gum disease, your dentist may recommend that you take antibiotics, change your at-home oral care routine, and/or undergo a deep cleaning of your mouth. In some cases, surgery is even necessary to trim away damaged tissues. Each individual’s treatment plan is tailored to address the details of their unique case.

Why Are Extractions Part of Gum Disease Treatment?

Since tooth extractions do not directly fight gum disease, why are they so often included in a periodontal treatment plan? There are a couple of valid reasons:

  • Gum disease adversely affects dental function. Advanced gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. It can also cause severe damage to the underlying jawbone. Eventually, it can worsen to the point where the teeth no longer have a reliable base of support. They may become very loose, making it difficult for you to eat and speak comfortably.
  • Extractions open the way for effective treatment. Following your extractions, you can expect your mouth to feel more comfortable. Additionally, there will no longer be pockets between your gums and teeth where harmful bacteria can collect. It may therefore be easier for your dentist to treat your condition.

What Are the Options for Tooth Replacement after Gum Disease Treatment?

Understandably, you may be a bit disheartened if you learn that your teeth must be removed. However, there is reason for hope! After your mouth is free of active infections, you can start considering your tooth replacement options.

Dental implants are a popular choice because they are similar in feel and structure to natural teeth. However, bridges and dentures also have their advantages. Your dentist will help you weigh the pros and cons of each treatment.

Getting your teeth removed will not directly address gum disease. However, extractions can be a vital stepping stone on your path to restored oral health!
