In fact, most patients find that their treatment is much easier than they expected. What does a tooth extraction feel like? This blog post offers a general overview of what you may experience during and after your appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Patient Comfort Is a Priority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The majority of dentists are empathetic, caring people. They want their patients to be as comfortable as possible. That is why your dental team will thoroughly numb your mouth before your extraction starts. You may feel a pinch as the anesthesia is injected, but any pain should dissipate quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local anesthesia prevents you from experiencing pain. However, it does not completely block out sensations. You will still be able to feel pressure in your mouth as your dental team is working to remove your tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are not easily numbed, or if you have some anxiety related to your treatment, ask if your dentist offers sedation. Sedatives can limit your ability to experience pain and fear, meaning that they can make your extractions much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tooth Extraction Procedure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Basic tooth extractions are pretty straightforward. Essentially, your dentist will first use an elevator to lift the tooth from its socket. Next, they will grip the tooth with forceps and rock it back and forth to break the ligaments that are keeping it in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some extractions are more complex. They might require that incisions be made in the gums or that a tooth be broken into pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whichever type of extraction you undergo, you should not expect to experience any severe pain. Some pressure, along with tugging sensations, is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Can Expect Some Bleeding and Soreness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After your tooth has been removed, your dentist will clean out its socket and place sutures if necessary. Some mild intermittent bleeding is normal in the hours after an extraction, but it can typically be managed with gauze and light pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once any sedation and anesthesia wear off, your mouth is likely to be sore. Taking over-the-counter painkillers and getting plenty of rest should be enough to mitigate any discomfort. You should also stick to eating soft foods for at least a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most patients are back to feeling normal within 7 \u2013 10 days or so of their extraction procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
