Poor oral hygiene, smoking, and health conditions that\ncompromise the immune system all increase the risk of peri-implantitis.<\/li><li><strong>Failed osseointegration.<\/strong> Osseointegration\nis the process through which a dental implant bonds with the bone around it. This\noccurs in the months immediately after the implant placement surgery. If\nosseointegration is not successful, the implant will feel loose. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Do About a Loose Dental Implant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as you notice that one of your implants is loose,\ncall your dentist to schedule an appointment. Your dentist will examine the\nimplant and look for signs of an infection. They may also take an X-ray or CBCT\nscan to examine the bone around the implant and the portion of it that is not\nvisible to the naked eye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your treatment will depend on why the implant is loose. If\nthe issue is just a matter of a damaged restoration, your dentist can create a\nnew one. However, if failed osseointegration or peri-implantitis is the problem,\ntreatment may be quite lengthy. In some cases, it becomes necessary to remove\nthe implant, fight the infection, perform a bone graft, and then replace the\nimplant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keeping Your Dental Implants Where They Belong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You have a measure of control over whether your dental\nimplants thrive or struggle. To prevent them from becoming loose, you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Follow a diligent oral hygiene routine.<\/li><li>Visit your dentist for regular exams.<\/li><li>Avoid smoking.<\/li><li>Wear a mouthguard when you play sports.<\/li><li>If you struggle with bruxism (teeth grinding),\nask your dentist for a custom nightguard.<\/li><li>Do your best to manage your overall health.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Loose dental implants are rare, but they are always a\npossibility.
